Industry Overview
Fastening in food & beverage applications
Processing lines in the food and beverage sector are cleaned often, sometimes several times a shift, with water, detergents and sanitising chemicals. A fastener that rusts, stains or traps residue creates a maintenance problem and a hygiene risk. For this reason, equipment builders usually specify stainless steel for frames, guards, panels and fittings on processing machinery, filling systems and packaging equipment.
Accurate Fastners supplies stainless steel screws, bolts, nuts and washers to DIN and ISO standards in SS 202, SS 304 and SS 316, with grades documented per product. Socket head cap screws, countersunk Allen screws, DIN 1587 dome nuts and DIN 125 plain washers are among the items commonly found on this kind of equipment, alongside hex bolts and wing nuts for parts that are removed for cleaning.
Whether a component is suitable for food contact depends on the complete equipment design, surface finish, cleaning regime and the regulations that apply to the end product. Our role is to supply fasteners to the standard, grade and size you specify. Hygienic design approval rests with the equipment manufacturer.
Applications
Common fastening applications
Food processing machinery
Frames, guards and covers on mixers, cutters, cookers and conveyors are assembled with hex bolts, socket screws and nylock nuts. Wherever fasteners will be cleaned often, stainless grades are the usual choice.
Beverage filling systems
Fillers, rinsers and cappers use socket screws and hand-adjustable wing nuts on change-parts and guide rails. Operators adjust these parts during format changes and clean them between runs.
Packaging equipment
Form-fill-seal machines, cartoners and wrappers use countersunk and socket head screws on frames and guarding. These keep a smooth profile where film and cartons move past.
Covered thread ends
DIN 1587 dome nuts close off exposed thread ends on frames and panels. This gives a neater finish and leaves fewer recesses where residue can collect, depending on the joint design.
Stainless food-grade equipment
Worktables, hoppers, trolleys and racks made from stainless sheet and tube are usually assembled with stainless fasteners. This keeps the materials consistent and avoids rust staining.
Maintenance and spares
Plant maintenance teams keep stocks of common DIN 933 bolts, DIN 934 nuts, DIN 125 washers and DIN 912 screws in matching grades for routine repairs.
Selection
Selection considerations
Choose the grade for the cleaning regime
SS 304 is widely used on food equipment. SS 316 is commonly considered where salt, brine, acidic products or chloride-based sanitisers are present. Confirm the grade against your actual chemicals and temperatures.
Prefer cleanable geometry
Socket and countersunk heads, dome nuts and flush joints can reduce crevices compared with exposed threads. However, hygienic design depends on the whole assembly, including gaskets and surface finish.
Keep grades consistent
Using matching stainless grades for bolts, nuts and washers helps avoid localised corrosion at mixed-grade joints, particularly in wet environments.
Manage galling
Stainless threads can gall when tightened quickly or under high load. Controlled tightening and a lubricant suitable for food environments may help, as specified by the equipment designer.
Specify documentation early
If your quality system requires material documentation or traceability, state it in your enquiry so it can be reviewed against what is available for your order.
Materials & Environment
Material and environmental considerations
SS 304 is an austenitic stainless steel with good general corrosion resistance and is common on dry and wet food-equipment surfaces. SS 316 adds molybdenum, which generally improves resistance to chlorides found in brines, salty products and some cleaning chemicals. SS 202 is a lower-nickel grade typically reserved for milder, dry conditions, so it is less often chosen for wet processing areas.
Where stainless fasteners meet carbon steel or aluminium parts, galvanic corrosion can occur in wet conditions, so isolate dissimilar metals where practical. This is general engineering guidance only. The final material choice should be confirmed by the equipment designer for the specific product, cleaning method and temperature.
General guidance only. Confirm grade and design for your environment.
FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Does Accurate Fastners serve the food and beverage industry?
Yes. Food and beverage is one of the industries listed in our company brochure. We supply stainless steel fasteners for food processing machinery, beverage filling systems, packaging equipment and stainless food-grade equipment.
Which stainless grade should I use on food equipment?
SS 304 is widely used. SS 316 is commonly considered where chlorides, brine or aggressive sanitisers are present. Grades are documented per product on our product pages; please confirm the final choice with your equipment designer.
Are your fasteners certified for food contact?
We do not claim a food-contact certification. Suitability depends on the complete equipment design and the regulations that apply. Please state any documentation you need in your enquiry so it can be reviewed.
Why use dome nuts on food machinery?
DIN 1587 dome nuts cover the exposed thread end. This gives a neater, more cleanable finish and helps protect the thread. Whether they suit your application depends on your hygienic design approach.
