Overview
What is the DIN 976 Threaded Rod (Studs)?
DIN 976 is a German standard governing threaded rods, also commonly referred to as stud bolts or all-thread rods. The standard defines the geometry, thread pitch and tolerances for headless, fully threaded cylindrical fasteners that are secured at both ends using nuts. Such rods are widely used wherever two or more components must be clamped together at a fixed or adjustable spacing, or where a continuous length of thread is needed along the entire shank.
Accurate Fastners produces these rods by cold forging, a process that works the stainless steel billet at room temperature to shape it before threading. Cold forging generally refines the grain structure of the material, which may contribute to consistent mechanical properties throughout the rod. The threaded rod is headless by design, meaning there is no integral bearing surface; all clamping load is instead transferred through the nuts and washers assembled onto the rod at each end or at any intermediate point.
The range offered by Accurate Fastners covers metric diameters from M6 to M24 and imperial sizes from 1/4" to 1" in both BSW and UNC thread forms. This breadth of sizing makes a single product family usable across metric-dimensioned and inch-dimensioned equipment within the same facility. Quality checks are carried out during procurement and delivery, consistent with the company's documented quality control practice.

Product description
Construction and Geometry
A DIN 976 threaded rod is a cylindrical bar that carries a continuous external thread along its full length, with no head or integral flange. Accurate Fastners cold-forges these rods in stainless steel, then cuts or rolls the specified thread profile — metric, BSW or UNC — to the tolerances required by the standard. The absence of a head keeps the profile symmetrical, allowing the rod to be loaded from either end.
Diameter options run from M6 through M24 in the metric series and from 1/4" to 1" in both British Standard Whitworth and Unified National Coarse thread forms. Length is not fixed by DIN 976 itself; rods are cut to the required working length. Because the thread runs the full length, a rod may be cut on site without losing any usable thread, offering a degree of installation flexibility not available with partially threaded fasteners.
Functional Behaviour in an Assembly
In service, a DIN 976 rod passes through clearance holes in the components being joined and is tightened with a nut bearing against each outer face. A washer is commonly placed under each nut to distribute the bearing load. Because the rod itself does not rotate during tightening — unlike a bolt — the thread in contact with the nuts carries all the torque, and the clamping force is shared evenly across both ends of the joint.
This arrangement is well suited to applications where components must be assembled and disassembled repeatedly, or where the joint must be accessed from both sides. It is also common in applications requiring the clamped components to be positioned at a defined spacing — such as mounting frames, pipe supports or machinery panels — since the distance between nuts can be set independently of the rod length, within the limits of thread engagement.
How It Differs from Similar Fasteners
A DIN 976 threaded rod differs from a stud bolt (such as DIN 939 or DIN 938) in that it carries thread along its entire length rather than only at each end, leaving a plain shank in the middle. Fully threaded rods are therefore more versatile in variable-length applications, but the continuous thread means there is no plain shank to locate the rod in a close-tolerance hole. Where precise lateral location matters, a plain-shank stud is more appropriate.
Compared with a standard hex bolt, the rod provides no built-in bearing surface and requires a nut on both sides of the joint. This adds a component but removes directionality — the rod can be inserted from either side and tightened from either end. The absence of a head also allows the rod to pass through materials that are too thick for available bolt lengths, or through components stacked in a sandwich arrangement.
Material & Grade
Material and grade information
- SS 304
- SS 316
Accurate Fastners offers DIN 976 threaded rods in SS 304 and SS 316. SS 304 is an austenitic stainless steel with good corrosion resistance in many indoor and general industrial environments. It is commonly specified where the assembly will not be exposed to chloride-rich conditions or aggressive chemical media. SS 304 is widely used across food and beverage processing equipment, pharmaceutical machinery frames and general-purpose fabrication where moderate corrosion resistance is sufficient.
SS 316 contains molybdenum in addition to the chromium and nickel found in SS 304, which typically improves its resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-containing environments. It is often selected for applications in water treatment, coastal installations or where process chemicals may come into contact with the fastener. The choice between the two grades should be made in consultation with the project engineer based on the specific service environment. Both grades are available from Accurate Fastners; confirmation of grade and availability is recommended at the time of enquiry.
Grades shown are those documented for this product in the Accurate Fastners brochure. General material notes are guidance only; confirm grade selection for your environment.

Applications
Industrial applications
Water Treatment Equipment
DIN 976 rods in SS 316 may be considered for RO water purifier frames and membrane housings, where exposure to treated water and process chemicals makes corrosion-resistant fasteners a practical choice.
Solar Panel Mounting Structures
Fully threaded rods allow adjustable spacing when assembling solar panel racking systems, letting installers fine-tune module height and tilt before final nut tightening on either side of the mounting rail.
Pharmaceutical Machinery Frames
SS 304 or SS 316 threaded rods may be used in stainless equipment frames and enclosures for pharmaceutical processing, where hygiene requirements and frequent cleaning cycles call for corrosion-resistant fasteners.
Food and Beverage Processing
Threaded rods can serve as tie rods or clamping elements in food-grade equipment and conveyor structures, where stainless steel grades help resist corrosion from washdown fluids and food-contact environments.
LED Lighting Structures and Pump Installations
DIN 976 rods are used in luminaire support structures and submersible pump column assemblies, where adjustable, fully threaded fastenings allow components to be positioned and secured at the required depth or spacing.

Features & Selection
Features and selection considerations
Design features
Fully Threaded Length
Thread runs continuously from end to end, allowing nuts to be positioned anywhere along the rod and enabling on-site cutting without loss of usable thread engagement.
Cold-Forged Production
Cold forging is used in the manufacturing process, a method that typically produces consistent material density and dimensional uniformity across the rod's cross-section before threading.
Multiple Thread Forms
Available in metric, BSW and UNC thread forms within a single product family, allowing use across both metric-dimensioned and inch-dimensioned equipment in the same facility.
Wide Diameter Range
Metric sizes from M6 to M24, and imperial sizes from 1/4" to 1", provide coverage for light structural, general machinery and heavier industrial bolting requirements within DIN 976.
Headless, Symmetrical Profile
The absence of an integral head keeps the rod symmetrical, permitting installation from either direction and allowing assembly of multi-layer sandwich joints that bolt-head geometry would not accommodate.
Before you order
Thread Form and Pitch
Confirm whether the mating nuts and tapped holes use metric, BSW or UNC threads. Mixing thread forms within an assembly is not recommended; specifying the correct form at the enquiry stage avoids supply errors.
Diameter and Required Length
Select the rod diameter based on the load path and the clearance hole size in the components being joined. Required length should account for nut height, washer thickness and any protruding thread beyond the outer nut.
Grade Selection for the Environment
SS 304 is commonly used in general indoor environments; SS 316 may be considered where chlorides or aggressive process media are present. Discuss the service environment with Accurate Fastners' sales team to confirm the appropriate grade.
Quantity and Documentation
Provide the required quantity and any documentation needs — such as material test reports or compliance with IS, BS or DIN standards — when submitting an enquiry, so Accurate Fastners can confirm availability and prepare an accurate quotation.
